Blow flies, larger than common house flies, are easily recognized by their shiny metallic colors like green, black, or copper. These noisy flies lay eggs on exposed meat, and depending on the species, the larvae develop into adults in 7 to 15 days. They are often found near garbage, pet waste, and rotting food, causing problems for homes and businesses.
The Oriental latrine fly, a blow fly species, has been a persistent pest in Southern California since 1989. These flies gather near dumpsters and shaded spots during the summer. Larvae near buildings may migrate indoors to pupate, becoming a nuisance when they mature. Proper sanitation and waste disposal can effectively control blow fly populations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) has a unique flight pattern, often seen hovering mid-air without frequently landing on food, making it less likely to contaminate food.
They lay eggs in decaying plant material, compost, or animal excrement from pets such as rabbits and chickens. The complete life cycle from egg to adult is around 24 days. While they can be annoying, their preference for decaying matter minimizes the risk they pose indoors.
The false stable fly, scientifically known as Muscina stabulans, is slightly bigger and bulkier than the house fly. It has a dark gray appearance and, unlike the biting true stable fly, it doesn’t bite. However, it can still enter homes and lay eggs on slightly spoiled food.
Its maggots are commonly found in decomposing plant material and animal droppings. The false stable fly has a life cycle of about 14 days. While it isn’t harmful due to bites, its presence indoors can be bothersome, especially when eggs are laid. Understanding its patterns is crucial for controlling infestations.
Black garbage flies are small, shiny black insects about 1/5″ in length. These slender pests thrive in garbage, particularly in rural areas where trash collection is less frequent. While they aren’t typically found in urban homes, poor waste management can lead to their presence.
With a life cycle of around ten days, they develop quickly. Effective garbage disposal is essential in limiting their numbers.
Stable flies look like house flies but are equipped with a sharp beak for biting. They typically feed on livestock such as horses and cattle but will also bite humans, especially during rainy periods when they come indoors.
Stable flies are more than just a nuisance—they affect pets and livestock. These flies thrive in areas with moist, decaying materials, manure, and urine-soaked straw. Regular waste cleanup can help control their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are larger than house flies and recognized by their checkered abdomens. They are typically gray with black stripes along their thorax. Unlike other flies, flesh flies give birth to live maggots. The maggots are commonly found in spoiled meat, decaying flesh, and dog waste. Flesh flies are often located near dead animals and snails.
Flesh flies complete their life cycle in as little as eight days. They are usually found near decaying organic material. If you notice large, slow flies with a checkered abdomen, you may have a flesh fly infestation.
At Otay Ranch Pest Control, we start with an in-depth inspection of your property to pinpoint potential breeding areas for flies. We examine drains, garbage bins, and locations with standing water or decaying organic material, identifying various fly species like blow flies and drain flies.
We also inspect plumbing systems for leaks and blockages that might attract flies. By using specialized tools, we can find larvae and adults in concealed spaces, enabling us to tailor treatments for effective fly control.
Before our technician arrives, please ensure that both indoor and outdoor areas are cleaned to help us accurately locate the source of the fly problem. Our specialists will inspect your property and look for any underlying plumbing issues that may contribute to the infestation.
For drain flies, we use targeted treatments to eliminate both the larvae and adult flies in the drains. We treat around food prep zones but avoid spraying directly on surfaces. Fly traps are strategically placed to catch flies where they are most active.
Otay Ranch Pest Control provides a monthly service to control fly populations around your property. Our team inspects areas like drains and trash zones to eliminate breeding grounds.
We use eco-conscious treatments effective against flies like drain flies and blow flies. Monthly treatments ensure long-term protection, keeping your space fly-free all year long.
